ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND COMPETENCIES

 

Under general supervision, responsibilities include operating construction equipment and performing ground level work necessary in the construction, operation, and maintenance of LES electrical facilities in accordance with LES design standards, established policies, safety rules, procedures, and practices to provide a reliable electrical service to LES customers. The work requires considerable skill in manipulating heavy motor equipment and constant attention to safety of operation in order to prevent accidents. Performs emergency and overtime work, as necessary. Consistent and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position. 

 

  • Operates power equipment to excavate, drill, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete or other fill materials. Equipment includes, but is not limited to, backhoe, bobcat, boom truck, bucket truck, digger derrick, pipe borer, power driver, earth compactor, and trencher.
  • Operates hydro excavation equipment to perform potholing, trenching, tunneling, remote vaccing, locating utility lines, subsurface utility engineering, etc. 
  • Follows operating and maintenance procedures and guidelines for safe operation of the vac excavation equipment around energized facilities. 
  • Responsible for proper inspection of vehicle and equipment before use and maintaining the hydro excavation vehicle and equipment to always ensure top operating and safe condition.
  • Under general supervision, determines load weights and checks them against lifting capacities to prevent overload.
  • Under general supervision, loads and unloads bundles from trucks and moves containers to storage bins using moving equipment.
  • Takes actions to avoid potential hazards and obstructions such as utility lines, other equipment, coworkers, and falling objects. 
  • Assists in de-energized ground level work involved in the construction, operation, and maintenance of street light, distribution, and transmission electric line facilities including installation of de-energized cable and conductors; installation of de-energized pedestals and transformers; installation and maintenance of conduit and duct systems, de-energized cable, and conductor splices and terminations; follows LES procedures for line and substation switching; and assists line technicians in the  performance of such activities. 
  • Assists line technicians with installation, operation, and maintenance of energized services of 600 volts or less in an underground residential district. 
  • Complies with company safety policies and procedures while operating equipment.  
  • Performs customer related activities including outage notification.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED 

  • Read, interpret, and perform work from job prints, construction standard specifications, and other instructions. 
  • Organizational skills. 
  • Inventory maintenance and record keeping principles. 

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

  • High school diploma or G.E.D, and  
  • Two years experience performing ground level heavy equipment duties and progressively responsible experience in area of assignment, or  
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. 

 

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS 

  • Valid Class A commercial driver's license with minimum of an O restriction, with tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain within six months. 
  • Mobile Crane Operator Certification specializing in Service Truck Cranes or the ability to obtain within 18 months.
